South Dakota Wind
Here's a song about a controversial topic, that uses none of the buzz words of that topic, so you have to pay attention. This is a long song, but it's worth every minute. I'm not completely happy with this recording, but I've got people asking me for a version, so here it is. I'll try to get a better version before too much longer.
Chorus
That South Dakota Wind is blowin'
it chills souls to the bone
It's especially bitter cold when
you live out all alone
George and Abe, Ted and Tom
they look out upon this land
They must be wondering if and when
someone will lend a hand
Verses
She's a single mom with two kids
Got two jobs to get by
Here ex left her without so much
as a good luck or good bye
With him gone she had to push on
find a way to heal her pride
After bills are paid and beds are made
there's not much left inside
chorus
After two years of working like a slave
rarely seeing her kids for a day
No health care and nothing saved
She finally took some time to get away
She went down to the bar for a drink
met a man who was fine it seemed
In a moment of passion she didn't think
they planted a seed no one needs
chorus
Bridge
The politicians up in Pierre, Passed a law that doesn't care
About single moms who made a mistake, that don't allow to control her fate
Now instead of being legal and safe, Back rooms are the only place
She heard about a guy who works in the back room of a bar
He used a wire tool that looks like something to unlock a car
Verse
Later that same day she didn't feel too well
She drove herself down to the clinic from hell
But with no health care and she couldn't pay
They said take two aspirin and call the next day
So she went home and she went to bed
Next morning her kids found her ...
chorus
If you look real close you can see a trace
Of a tear rolling down Tom's face.

If she were "illegal," she
If she were "illegal," she could have gotten all the health care she needs....but that's another topic...lol
Aside from that, the "sung" version of the song is too long. I'd forgotten who Tom was until I was able to read the lyrics. I'm not trying to be critical, just honest. I think the song meanders on far too long, and by the time the end comes I don't care about her or who Tom is. It doesn't hold my attention. Also, you are trying to cover too many different subjects in the song...These four guys need help. She needs help. The land needs help. Her kids need help. And finally, the politicians in the song are beyond help. Another thing I just thought of. Why is this guy Tom shedding a tear at the end. Where was he when she needed him? He was the father right? He knew she was pregnent. That's why he shed a tear, right? In addition..lol...what do the other three guys have to do with the story? We never hear their names again. To tell you the truth, maybe Tom gets lost with all the names. Too many unresolved issues in the song. I get the impression that Tom still hangs around the bar trying to pick-up women. This would be a "killer" song if you just focused on her and Tom. I understand what you are trying to say in the song, but this goes on and on like Gordon Lightfoot's "Canadian Railroad Trilogy"---great lyrics, but the song makes me start looking for a razor blade. Personally, I kind of like longer songs (5-7 minutes). However, to hold my attention, they have to be focused, so I can focus. Otherwise, my mind wanders around with the lyrics and soon I'm just wandering and no longer focusing.
Now I don't know if these are the kind of comments you are looking for, but there they are just the same. We can't help each other if all we do is say "Great song, Larry," "Wow, Jim. That is awesome."....... Your song about your son is much more "to the point" and it's easy to connect to. It's very real to me. I can apply most of it to me and my son when he was Tommy's age. It's well-written, personal, and it touches people. Just my view, Jimmy. Anyway, keep writing, becasue "what in hell do I know?"
No! Undocumented immigrants don't get free health care!!
This is a completely false talking point used by the anti-immigration crowd to incite us. Here is the truth - the only way a non citizen (or anyone without health insurance for that matter) gets free health care is if they are critically ill or dying. By law, hospitals may not turn away patients who are critically ill or at risk of death. This includes women in labor. But no way can a pregnant woman get an abortion in any state without paying for it. Your tax dollars are not being used to finance the health care of massive numbers of undocumented workers, or to pay for their abortions.
Great song, Jim. I think it's your best yet.
"Tom" as in Jefferson!
I don't believe you do understand what I'm trying to say in the song.
George (Washington) and Abe (Lincoln), Ted (Roosevelt) and Tom (Jefferson) they look out upon this land. Hello? Mt. Rushmore is in South Dakota. Get it? Sorry I didn't spell it out for you. I tried to leave a little intellectual content and intrigue. I guess it went over your head. Tom (Jefferson) is shedding a tear (metaphorically, of course, because he's dead, or he's just a stone carving on a mountain, just in case you didn't get that part) because of what the religious right is doing to this country.
There is only ONE topic in this song. That's why you have to pay attention. Each verse changes the meaning of what the South Dakota Wind chilling souls to the bone means. The first verse might imply simply that she is working poor, the second that she is alone, which are both true and important to the setup as well as part of the point, but the real topic, the real point of the song, is what happens in the bridge and the tragic results of which are brought home in the final verse and chorus.
I agree that the song is a bit too long, but there aren't any parts to cut out. I could make the bridge shorter instrumentally, I guess, but all the words are critical to the story. Originally I didn't go to the chorus before the bridge, but it just seemed to work right, since the meaning of the chorus is constantly shifting. I could cut out the first chorus, I suppose, and jump right into the first verse. That might tighten it up a bit. I'll try that.
I know that this song will never make it in Nashville, for reasons of length as well as content, but I could give a shit. If it makes people think, then I have all that I ever wanted from it, or any of my songs, for that matter. Hopefully I've made you think, Larry. About geography, history, and the necessity of a woman having the option of safely and legally ending an unwanted pregnancy. Would it be fair to those two kids of her's, that she rarely sees, to bring another mouth to feed into their home? No. Abortions need to be legal, safe, and rare. That doesn't come about through prayer and abstinence only education, let me tell you. No matter what lies the right wing propaganda machine might spew. Keep your laws of my body, and my daughter's body, and all her friend's bodies. The government has no business outlawing such an intensely private medical procedure. Where are the "smaller government" shills when it comes to writing laws that invade people's medical privacy? Who do the fat cat MALE lawmakers think they are making private medical decisions for women? If your daughter was raped, and ended up pregnant, and she lived in South Dakota, she would be forced to bear that bastard child, and every time she looked at that child, she would be reminded of that rape. That's a real f***ing compassionate law, now isn't it?
Thanks for the feedback. It's been fun. :-)
